WORK-BASED LEARNING
At BIC Ljubljana – Higher Vocational College, we offer far more than academic study—we provide a wealth of practical experiences that enable our students to become part of a professional working environment while they are still studying. We believe that hands-on experience is the foundation of a successful career.
Why is Practical Training the key to our graduates’ success?
- Strong links with industry – We work closely with leading companies in the food industry, hospitality, and tourism sectors, ensuring that students gain relevant, up-to-date professional experience.
- Learning in authentic professional environments – Students develop their practical skills from the very beginning of their studies at BIC Ljubljana. They gain experience through culinary training in our modern KULT316 Restaurant, the country’s only school travel agency, the KULT316 Café, as well as in specialist laboratories and product development workshops.
- Professional mentoring – Students are supported throughout their Practical Training by experienced Company mentors and academic staff who encourage creativity, independent thinking, and professional confidence.
- A direct pathway to employment – Practical Training, which takes place during both the first and second years and totals 800 hours, is often the first step towards permanent employment. Many of our partner organisations recognise BIC Ljubljana students as highly competent professionals who are ready to contribute immediately thanks to their strong theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience.
STUDY PROGRAMMES
Hospitality and Tourism
The Higher Vocational Study Programme in Hospitality and Tourism is designed for students seeking a dynamic, modern, and practice-oriented education enriched by extensive experience in real working environments.
Students gain hands-on experience primarily at KULT316 – the Culinary and Tourism Centre, where practical training takes place in authentic professional settings, including the KULT316 training restaurant and café, a demonstration and training kitchen, a model hotel room, a conference hall, a wine cellar, Slovenia’s first school microbrewery, and the country’s first school travel agency.
Additional practical experience is gained through placements in hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and other hospitality and tourism businesses in Slovenia and abroad. Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are awarded a higher vocational qualification and the professional title Hospitality and Tourism Business Operations Organiser.
The programme is ideal for students interested in gastronomy and contemporary culinary trends, food preparation and service, and complementary fields such as wine studies, bartending, brewing, and culinary heritage. It also appeals to those interested in tourism, tourism trends, foreign languages, complementary tourism activities, travel agencies, hotel reception services, and congress and event tourism.
Students can tailor their studies through a wide selection of elective modules and subjects. In the second year, they may choose specialised modules in either hospitality or tourism, depending on their professional interests.
Thanks to the extensive practical experience gained during laboratory sessions and 800 hours of Practical Training in leading hospitality and tourism organisations, graduates are highly regarded by employers and enjoy excellent employment prospects.
Food Technology and Nutrition

The programme is intended for students seeking an engaging, practice-oriented education with extensive laboratory work and opportunities to develop professional skills in real working environments. Throughout their studies, students complete practical placements in the food industry, food production companies, craft businesses, and other organisations related to food technology and nutrition, both in Slovenia and abroad.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are awarded a higher vocational qualification and the professional title Food Technology and Nutrition Technician.
The programme is suitable for anyone interested in nutrition, dietetics, gastronomy, food composition, and food processing technologies, including the processing of plant-based foods, meat, dairy products, cereals, wine production, and brewing. In addition, the programme provides knowledge of business economics and management, information technology, statistics, Business Communication and Leadership, professional terminology in English or German, and food legislation.
Students can personalise their studies through a broad range of elective modules. During the second year, they may choose modules and individual subjects focusing on either nutrition or food technology, according to their interests and career goals.
