Vocational education in Škofja Loka has a long tradition dating back to 1889. The Škofja Loka School Centre continues and further develops this tradition through its Higher Vocational College for Mechanical Engineering and Wood Technology.
Over the years, the demands placed on engineering professionals have changed significantly. The knowledge required by modern product development and manufacturing processes extends far beyond the traditional disciplines of mechanical engineering and wood technology. New industrial models, such as Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, require expertise in computer-aided technologies, automation, robotics, the integration of manufacturing with information systems, and the use of digital databases.
Success in today’s global marketplace also requires proficiency in foreign languages, strong communication skills, and the ability to use modern information and communication technologies (ICT). As a result, employers increasingly seek graduates who are innovative, resourceful, and equipped with advanced professional knowledge.
At the Higher Vocational College Škofja Loka, we welcome students who are curious, motivated to acquire new knowledge and practical skills, and willing to invest the effort required to succeed. Studying at a Higher Vocational College differs from secondary education in that it places greater emphasis on independent learning, research, the use of professional literature, and the preparation of reports and seminar papers.

STUDY PROGRAMMES
Mechanical Engineering
A Mechanical Engineering Technician is a highly skilled professional capable of integrating knowledge and practical skills to identify, analyse, and solve a wide range of technical challenges, both independently and as part of a team.
Mechanical engineers are expected to be conscientious, precise, methodical, and efficient in their work, while demonstrating a strong sense of professional responsibility.
The multidisciplinary nature of the profession requires a solid foundation in the core disciplines of mechanical engineering, including mechanics, machine elements, engineering materials, and manufacturing technologies. These traditional engineering subjects are complemented by expertise in computer technologies, computer-aided design (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
The design and development of products and manufacturing processes also require a thorough understanding of technical standards and regulations, product design, occupational health and safety, and environmental protection.
Wood Technology
A Wood Technology Technician is a versatile professional who combines a broad range of knowledge and practical skills to identify, analyse, and solve technical challenges, either independently or as part of a team. The profession requires diligence, precision, consistency, efficiency, and a strong commitment to professional responsibility.
Wood Technology Technicians must be proficient in technical drawing and skilled in the use of a variety of computer-aided design and technical documentation tools. Equally important is the ability to select the most appropriate materials, manufacturing processes, and surface finishing techniques, ensuring both the aesthetic quality and long-term durability of wood products.
